Title: "3D Wireless Sensor Networks: Challenges and Solutions"

Speaker: Hongyi Wu, Professor and Director, School of Computing and
Informatics, University of Louisiana at Lafayette

Abstract: There have been increasing interests in deploying wireless
sensors in three-dimensional (3D) space for such applications as
underwater reconnaissance and atmospheric monitoring. An individual
sensor is highly resource-constrained, with extremely limited
computing, storage, and communication capacities. To network a large
number of such sensor nodes is nontrivial. Particularly, compared with
its 2D counterpart, the scalability problem is greatly exacerbated in
a 3D sensor network due to dramatically increased sensor quantity in
order to cover a 3D space. This talk will introduce a collection of
unique and challenging problems in 3D wireless sensor networks and
present the recent findings in this emerging area.

Bio: Hongyi Wu received the B.S. degree in scientific instruments from
Zhejiang University, Hangzhou, China, in 1996, and the M.S. degree in
electrical engineering and Ph.D. degree in computer science from the
State University of New York (SUNY) at Buffalo in 2000 and 2002,
respectively. Since then, he has been with University of Louisiana at
Lafayette, where he is now the Alfred and Helen Lamson Endowed
Professor in Computer Science and the Director of School of Computing
and Informatics. His research spans delay-tolerant networks, radio
frequency identification (RFID) systems, wireless sensor networks, and
integrated heterogeneous wireless systems. He received NSF CAREER
Award in 2004 and UL Lafayette Distinguished Professor Award in 2011.

内容:三维传感器网络在水下勘察,山体监测,及空中探索等方面具有广泛的应用前景。由于监测对象位于三维空间,通常需要大量传感器节点才能实现完全覆盖。然而单个传感器节点的计算,储存和通讯能力都极其有限,所以和二维网络相比,如何实现三维传感器网络的可扩展性将更具挑战性。这次报告将先容一系列三维传感器网络中特有的问题并讨论相关的解决方案,包括传感器定位,边界识别,网络分割,节点部署,地理路由及分步式数据储存和提取等。

报告人概况:吴宏毅现为美国路易斯安那大学教授,并担任计算机和信息学院院长。他先后于1996,2000和2002年在浙江大学和美国纽约州立大学布法罗分校获得学士、硕士和博士学位。他主要从事无线计算机网络的研究,包括移动随机网络,RFID系统,传感器网络,和集成复合型网络。他曾获美国国家科学基金会杰出青年教授奖(NSF CAREER Award 2004)和路易斯安娜大学杰出教授奖(Distinguished Professor2011)。他还担任几个国际期刊的编委并参与多个国际会议的组织工作(包括INFOCOM,MOBIHOC,ICDCS等)。个人主页:http://www.cacs.louisiana.edu/~wu/
